Description
Sukhumi State Drama Theater has been a symbol of Georgian theatrical culture for more than 135 years. The theater has a rich creative history that reflects its experiences and interaction with the era. Since its foundation, the theater has been given special attention to works imbued with local patriotic ideas. From the first years of its existence, the theater delighted the residents of Sukhumi with Georgian performances staged by stage lovers.
In its long history, the theater has staged performances by world and Georgian classics, as well as works by contemporary authors. Outstanding Georgian directors and actors have worked on its stage, their names are familiar to many: David Dzneladze, Konstantin Andronikashvili, Georgi Zhuruli, Benoit Gamrekeli and many others. The cast also amazes with the variety of talents.
Today, the Sukhumi State Drama Theater continues to develop and remain relevant, focusing on modern Georgian literature. Cooperation with modern Georgian playwrights and writers allows the theater to raise the most important modern problems, such as the problems of internally displaced persons.
The theater is also actively involved in international projects: it is a member of the UNESCO International Theater Institute, has founded theater platforms with Germany and Poland, and is a laureate of several international theater competitions and festivals.
