Turtle Lake (კუს ტბა) in Tbilisi

Description

Turtle Lake (Georgian: კუს ტბა), also known as Turtle Lake, is a picturesque body of water located in the southern part of the Vake-Saburtalo district of Tbilisi. The lake, located at an altitude of 686.7 meters above sea level, is fed through a channel by the small Varaziskhevi River, a tributary of the Kura River. The area of the lake is 0.044 km2.

The name “Turtle Lake” arose due to the abundance of turtles that previously inhabited these areas. Today, the lake is one of the most popular recreation areas for both Tbilisi residents and visitors to the city.

Around the lake there is a well-maintained pebble beach, which serves as an ideal place for relaxation and walks. You can get to the lake both by road and by cable car from Vake Park. The lower station of the cable car is located near the central entrance to Vake Park from Chavchavadze Avenue.

There is a catamaran rental on the lake, which allows you to enjoy boat trips. The adjacent territory has sports grounds and walking paths, which makes Turtle Lake an ideal place for active recreation. There are also several cafes and restaurants near the lake where you can enjoy local cuisine.

To the west of the lake is the Tbilisi Open-Air Ethnographic Museum, which is a unique cultural space.

In 2019, it is planned to connect Turtle Lake with Mtatsminda Park with an equipped 6-kilometer trail, which will add even more opportunities for walking and active recreation.
