Description

George Chitaya Ethnographic Open Air Museum in Tbilisi is a unique platform where you can immerse yourself in the rich cultural history of Georgia. Situated on a hill overlooking the Vake region, the museum occupies 52 hectares of land and is a historical village inhabited by authentic buildings transferred from various regions of the country.

The museum is divided into eleven zones and includes about 70 buildings and more than 8,000 exhibits. Here you can see traditional stone houses of the Darbazia type with flat roofs from eastern Georgia, openwork wooden houses with gable roofs from western Georgia, watchtowers from the mountainous provinces of Khevsureti, Pshavi and Svaneti. Also on display are Mingrelian and Imeretian storehouses for woven corn, Kakheti wineries (marani), Kartlian watermills and a collection of traditional household items such as spinning wheels, knitting frames, chums, clothing, carpets, ceramics and furniture.

Particular attention is drawn to the early Christian basilica "Sioni" from Tianeti and a family tomb of the 6th-7th centuries with a sarcophagus, which makes the museum not only a cultural, but also a spiritual center.

Since 2004, the museum has annually hosted the summer folk culture festival Art-Gene, founded and run by Georgian rock musician and folk lover Zaza Korinteli (known as “Zumba”). This event attracts many guests and allows you to dive deeper into the traditions and customs of Georgia.

To visit the Tbilisi Open Air Museum of Ethnography, you can buy tickets on our website. There you can also find the museum’s work schedule and a poster of upcoming events.
