Zghvis Ubani in Tbilisi

Description

Zghvis Ubani is a unique historical district in the Old City, stretching from Vakhtang Gorgasali Square to Betlemi Street. We are pleased to offer you the opportunity to visit this place, which is one of the most popular tourist routes in the city.

The name of the district, both modern and former, is associated with outstanding figures in art. It is dedicated to Pirosmani, brothers Ilya and Kirill Zdanevich, who made significant contributions to culture and art. Previously, the area was called 1st Gorgasali Lane.

The history of this place goes back many centuries. One of the oldest churches in the city, Surb Gevorg, built in the 13th century, has been preserved here. It was built by Prince Umek, who came here from the city of Karin, modern Erzurum. The proximity to the main market square of the city contributed to the development of trade and crafts on the street.

In the 19th-20th centuries, the area of this street was destroyed by the Persians during the invasion of Agha Mohammed Khan in 1795. All civil buildings were destroyed, and the Surb Gevorg Church was robbed and partially burned. However, thanks to restoration work, the street began its new development in the middle of the 19th century, after Georgia became part of the Russian Empire in 1805.

Today, the street has been restored and attracts visitors with its unique historical appearance. At its beginning, there is a famous restaurant complex "Machakhelo" and "Samikitno", adding charm and a cozy atmosphere to this place.
