Rustaveli Theater – leading drama theater in Georgia, located in Tbilisi on Rustaveli Avenue, 17b. It was built in 1898-1901 on the initiative and financial support of the famous Tiflis merchant and philanthropist Isai Pitoev. The building project was developed by architects K. Tatishchev and A. Shimkevich.
Since 1926, the theater was headed by A.V. Akhmeteli. For outstanding achievements in the development of Georgian theatrical culture, on September 5, 1936, the theater was awarded the Order of Lenin, and a number of its workers received other state awards, such as the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and the Order of the Badge of Honor.
